Welcome!

I am so glad you found me! I'm Krissy K, an inspiring Interior Designer.  And I confess, I have a thing for chairs.  I'm not sure how or why or when, but somehow, I've developed a curiosity for them.  How the shape of them has changed and developed over thousands of years.  How they support us while we work, study, relax, rest and conversate.  The materials used, the style, the curvature of the wood, the carvings, the feet, the angles, the fabrics, etc, etc!  How, seemingly, there's a "right" chair for so many aspects of our lives.
In this blog, I will journey around the world to learn and explore the history of how and why we sit.  I will travel back in time, to faraway lands to study how ancient cultures designed, not only chairs, but all types of furniture to make life and work not only more efficient, but also more beautiful and comfortable!

My dream destination came to me a couple of years ago while reading the book "The Island of Missing Trees" by Elif Shafak.  The story follows star crossed lovers on the war-torn Mediterranean island of Cyprus during the 1970's.  The author described the beauty of Cyprus in amazing detail, and having never heard of the island myself, I quickly took to the Google machine to learn about it.  I was enthralled as I scanned through the hundreds of images: stunning architecture, lush palm trees, and the clearest ocean waters.  SWOON!  Learning about the tense history between Turkey and Greece to claim the beautiful island only deepened my fascination.

This may not be the absolute oldest thing I own, but it is my most favorite oldest thing.  Unfortunately, it's mostly used as a spot to hang clothes. You know the spot; already worn, but not quite ready for the hamper yet.  In any case, I inherited this wooden chair when my grandma passed away.  It's made of wood and has a leather seat with nail head trim.  I love the back, and the shapes carved that give it a fan like look.  Someday I hope to give it the more prestigious location it deserves.

It's hard to choose one topic I'm most excited about learning this term.  It all fascinates me!  But if I had to pick, I would say Greece, Italy, and the American periods.  I'm also very excited to be returning to the Art Museum.  I was there a couple of years ago, when I was just starting to realize my love for interior design.  To no surprise, I loved the Wall of Chairs.  I look forward to taking a closer look at all the furniture in the museum's collection with a bit more knowledge of the history behind each piece.
